OUR SOCIAL MISSION

OUR SPICE SUPPLIERS ARE ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE FAIR TRADE ALLIANCE KERALA. WE'VE PARTNERED WITH THEM TO DONATE 5% OF OUR CARDAMOM MASALA & ASSAM TEA SALES TO HELP SUPPORT THEIR RURAL FARMING INITIATIVES IN WAYANAD, KERALA.

WHAT IS THE FAIR TRADE ALLIANCE KERALA (FTAK)?

THE FTAK IS A SMALL FARMER COLLECTIVE WHICH WAS CREATED TO IMPROVE FARMERS INCOME THROUGH FAIR TRADE AND RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION. AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, MANY FARMERS WERE NOT EVEN GETTING THE COST OF PRODUCTION AND WERE STRUCK BY INDEBTEDNESS AND POVERTY.

THE FTAK EVOLVED TO ENSURE THAT SMALL SCALE FARMING IS A SUSTAINABLE OCCUPATION WHERE FARMERS ARE GIVEN A FAIR PRICE FOR THEIR PRODUCTS, AND OWNERSHIP GIVES THEM MORE POWER WITHIN THE SUPPLY CHAIN. SUPPORT IS GIVEN TO PROMOTE ORGANIC PRACTICES AND IN TURN, HELPS FARMERS TO PROTECT AND NURTURE THE LAND WHILST GIVING THEM ACCESS TO HIGHER PRICE POINTS AND PREMIUM MARKETS.

THE FTAK HAS NOW GROWN TO 5000 FARMERS WITH ALL MEMBERS CERTIFIED IN ORGANIC PRODUCTION. HOWEVER, THE EFFECTS OF PESTS, CLIMATE CHANGE, DESTRUCTION OF CROPS AND FALLING COMMODITY PRICES STILL PLAGUE MANY FARMERS.

WE HOPE THAT OUR CONTRIBUTION WILL HELP TO SUPPORT THEIR MISSION - READ ON BELOW TO SEE HOW IT ALL WORKS.

WHERE DOES THE 5% GO?

Our Donation of 5% is added to the cost of our spices as an additional premium on top of organic and fair trade prices.

The raw Cost of produce provides instant support to farming families.

Once Farmers/groups have paid back the initial subsidised loans, they are passed on to another group of farmers in a fully sustainable cycle.

Funds are received by the FTAK cooperative in Wayanad, Kerala - A Centralised hub.

Further initiatives like soil testing and organic manure units are also supported.

Funds are distributed as subsidised loans to help rural farmers access goods and infrastructure for organic farming.
